Description
IL-17A, also known as CTLA8, is a member of the IL-17 family of cytokines. This family demonstrate a structural motif termed a cysteine knot that also characterizes a large superfamily of growth factors. The IL-17 family of cytokines includes six members, IL-17A, IL-17B, IL-17C, IL-17D, IL-17E/IL-25, and IL-17F. IL-17A main funcion is stimulates production of IL-6, prostaglandin E and nitric oxide. And other inflammatory cytokines(TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IFN -gamma) leads to up-regulation of gene expression and progression and amplification of local inflammation. In addition, it serves induction of co-stimulatory molecules such as ICAM-1 and other cytokines, thereby supporting T cell activation. IL-17 expression has been associated with several chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis.
